How To Boost Self-Esteem

Nancy MacGregor MA, ATR-BC, LPC, ACS, Clinical Director

Self-esteem plays a big role in our daily lives, whether we realize it or not. While a lot of times we care about what other people think of us, self-esteem is about how you feel and think about yourself. There are bound to be times where we’re not feeling our best, but it doesn’t have to stay that way. Luckily, there are small changes that you can implement every day that will make a huge impact on your self-esteem.

Be Nice

We tend to be our harshest critics. When you start being hard on yourself, stop for a minute and think about how you would talk to your best friend or loved one. Would you talk down to them or provide words of encouragement? Give yourself the same support you would give them and watch how your outlook on yourself changes.

It’s Not a Competition

It is so easy to compare yourself to those around you, especially when you see everyone posting their highlight reel on social media. Maybe your life isn’t where you thought it would be at this point in your life. Guess what? That’s okay! Everyone has a different journey, so you have to trust the timing of your life and that things are going to work out when they are supposed to. When you start to compare and contrast, just remember that everyone is putting their best foot forward on social media, and not everything is as it appears.

Stay Positive

It might be hard but maintaining a positive outlook when things aren’t going your way is a sure-fire way to keep your self-esteem where it should be: up. Focus on the good traits you encompass and celebrate when good things happen around you. To keep the positivity going, start the morning by writing down three things you are grateful for and end the day by writing down three things you did well. Here’s a hint: getting out of bed can be one of those things.

Get Active

Exercise is a great way to boost self-esteem. Not only does it do great things for your mood and mental health, but exercise keeps you in shape too. And the better you feel, the better your outlook on yourself will be.

Mistakes Happen to the Best of Us

Everyone makes mistakes, so if one slipped in, don’t be too hard on yourself. You are human and can only do the best you can (which may vary depending on the day). The best way to come back from a mistake is acknowledging what went wrong and figuring out how to prevent it moving forward. Everything can be a learning experience if you let it.

Focus on What Makes You Happy

Doing things that bring you joy and limiting the things that don’t can have a seriously positive impact on your mood and thinking. Take as little as 10 minutes a day to do something for yourself, whether it’s listening to music, reading, dancing, singing, cooking, or spending time with friends and family. The more you do what you love, the more you’ll love yourself.
