Nutritional Therapy at Harmony Bay Wellness

Harmony Bay Wellness provides Nutrition Services as a part of a Holistic And Comprehensive approach To promote Well Being In all aspects of an Individual’s Life.

Nutrition and diet play a critical role in mental health, but sometimes this goes unnoticed. Traditionally, most people only link nutrition with psychical health. However, studies have shown that proper nutrition fuels our body and helps it function by affecting our cognitive process, emotions, and preventing chronic diseases.

Fruit & Vegetables

Researchers have seen a direct correlation between the modern “Western” diet and a decline in mental health in much of the world. As a result, 1-in-4 suffer from mental health conditions like mood disorders, general anxiety, depression, and eating disorders.

For all of these mental health conditions, a nutritional therapy program can help within holistic mental health treatment via outpatient programs and/or telehealth treatment.

What is a Nutritional Therapy Program?

Nutritional services at Harmony Bay Wellness are designed to support individuals to improve their nutritional status whether due to a health condition, disordered eating, or simply wanting to live a healthy lifestyle.

During the nutritional assessment process, a registered dietician will obtain information from you and learn more about your desired goals. Collaboratively with the dietician, you will formulate a treatment plan based on the information provided and the dietician’s assessment.

The registered dietician may also provide education and counseling during the assessment process.

After meeting for the first initial appointment you will meet with a registered dietician for additional visits to review your goals, progress, and receive nutritional education or counseling.

Are Nutritional Services Right for You?

People in a Marathon

In a nutshell, many of us are eating more processed foods. Why? Because they’re easy and taste good. But they also contain substances that wreak havoc on the system. Additionally, they keep us from eating the foods we should.

As a result, we may be lacking in Omega-3, a vital nutrient for brain function, among other things. We see deficits in B vitamins and numerous minerals that strongly impact mood and emotional health.

Nutritional services may be right for you if you are:

  • Attempting to live a healthier lifestyle
  • Looking to lose weight
  • Suffering from a diabetic condition
  • At risk for heart disease
  • On a medication that contributes to weight gain

Benefits of Nutritional Counseling:

  • Learning to practice mindful eating benefits our bodies both physically and mentally.
  • Eating foods that contain vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants nourish the brain and body, and help fight fatigue and boost our mood.
  • Nutrition therapy nurtures your body and mind so that you’re in the best position to heal.

Nutrition therapy doesn’t just give a quick fix solution like “take your vitamins,” which studies show does little. Rather, it helps you become more aware of what you’re putting in your body and how you feel after eating certain types of food.

Nutritional counseling may not cure anxiety, depression, or addiction. But it nurtures your body and mind so that you’re in the best position to heal. It provides both a fulfilling and sustainable solution to help you manage symptoms by being aware of what you eat.

Nutrition & Diet Assessment

What are the Benefits of Improving & Having Healthy Nutrition?

Eating foods that contain vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants will nourish the brain and body. In contrast, a diet that is high in sugar and processed chemicals can worsen mental health systems and make you feel sluggish and tired.

We must eat a whole and balanced diet to fight fatigue and boost our mood. A healthy diet is said to include a full range of vegetables, fruits, legumes, fish, whole grains, and healthy fats.

Unhealthy diets are proven to lead to problems like diabetes, heart disease, cancer, obesity, and is known as one of the main causes of early death in America. Those who eat a diet that is high in sugar, sodium, and saturated fat are more likely to develop depression, anxiety, and have trouble focusing.

Benefits to Improving Nutrition

As you re-build your cells with proper nutrition, you’ll notice a significant difference in how you feel physically and mentally. That includes things like:

  • Fewer aches and pains
  • Better sleep
  • More balanced mood
  • More energy
  • A healthier relationship with food
  • A desire to connect with people and live life to its fullest
  • Reduced symptoms of chronic physical illnesses like diabetes, high blood pressure, joint pain, etc.

Foods high in sugar can also lead to inflammation throughout the brain and body, contributing to mood disorders. If you are suffering from a mental health disorder, eating processed, unhealthy foods could be making your symptoms worse.

In society, we often think of mental health as something separate from the body that must be targeted only from a “mental” point of view. But this is a fiction we tell ourselves. In actuality, the body and mind are linked inseparably.

For example, the body produces hormones that influence how we feel and the severity of certain mental disorders.

Here are some foods that are said to promote brain function:

  • Blueberries
  • Avocados
  • Salmon
  • Turmeric
  • Broccoli
  • Eggs
  • Almonds
  • Dark Chocolate

On the other hand, our mental state can indisputably impact our physical bodies. For example, positive thinking can increase how fast people heal. And those with certain mental health challenges can increase their physical pain levels by focusing on what might otherwise be mild pain.

Another factor in our nutrition and diet is how much we eat. Listen to your body by practicing mindful eating and never deprive your body of food. When we are tired, hungry, bored, or stressed, it is common for us to binge on sugary or fatty foods. Learning to differentiate between physical and emotional eating is important to remain healthy, both mentally and physically.

Incorporating Diet & Nutrition with Mental Health Treatment

Nutritional counseling may not cure anxiety, depression, or addiction. But it nurtures your body and mind so that you’re in the best position to heal. It provides both a fulfilling and sustainable solution to help you manage symptoms by being aware of what you eat.

Whether you are eating too much or too little, this can have a large impact on your health. Changing up your nutrition can be a great addition to traditional therapy. Our licensed therapists and psychiatrists may recommend a nutritionist to help you manage your diet and practice mindful eating.

Through holistic treatment, you can overcome mental health challenges and learn to live a more fulfilling life.  If you have a mental health disorder, know that proper nutrition is a very important piece of the healing puzzle. And a nutritional therapy program can help you learn to heal yourself–instead of hurt yourself–with food.
