What is a Psychiatry Program & Who is the Program For?

Psychiatry focuses on diagnosing, treating, and preventing emotional, behavioral, and mental disorders. Moreover, a psychiatrist is a medical doctor who specializes in preventing, diagnosing, and treating various mental health issues, including disorders associated with substance use.

REASONS PEOPLE SEEK THE HELP OF A PSYCHIATRIST

People may request assistance from a psychiatrist to deal with long-term feelings or to address problems that arise suddenly.

  • Ongoing restlessness
  • Desperation
  • Unhappiness

Long-term feelings can disrupt everyday life, making an individual feel as if they are not in control or that everyday life is somehow twisted.

PSYCHIATRIC EVALUATIONS AT HARMONY BAY

Typically, the need for a psychiatric evaluation begins when someone close to the individual notices that they are experiencing changes in their overall mental state.

These potential changes include:

  • Rebelliousness
  • Anger
  • Impatience
  • Sadness
  • Anxiety
  • Depression
  • Poor physical hygiene
  • Tension
  • Sudden relationship changes
  • Substance abuse
  • Insomnia
  • Sloppy work habits
  • Mood swings
  • Emotional outbursts
  • Difficulty concentrating
  • Violent outbursts
  • A short attention span
  • Avoiding social gatherings
  • Having little to no desire to interact with others (i.e., wanting to be alone, becoming reclusive)

An individual can begin having these feelings for no reason whatsoever. Nonetheless, there are certain environments and specific events that can cause the symptoms to intensify.

The first step in the psychiatric assessment is to identify whether there is a reason for the individual’s behavior. If there is, the psychiatrist determines the factors contributing to the client’s mental health condition.

These contributing factors may include the clients:

  • Medical history
  • Substance use
  • Social experiences
  • Development
  • History or family history of mental illness
  • General mental wellness

The psychiatrist may combine the client’s psychiatric assessment with some of Harmony Bay's therapy services.

A psychiatric evaluation starts by identifying the circumstances or causes of the mental health condition. This can include individual or family history, substance use, development, medical history, social experiences, or overall mental wellness.

In addition, we may combine a psychiatric evaluation with some of our mental health therapy services, such as:

  • Psychotherapy
  • Individual therapy
  • Telehealth services
  • Family therapy
  • Evaluations for alcohol or drug abuse
  • Couples therapy

We also offer intensive outpatient programs that we may recommend after performing psychiatric evaluations.

OVERCOMING THE STIGMA OF MENTAL HEALTH ISSUES

6

Many people avoid psychiatric evaluations due to the stigma associated with mental health issues. While this is understandable, you may discover that your fear or embarrassment isn’t helping you overcome your condition.

Remember that you are not alone in dealing with a mental condition. Unfortunately, many Americans suffer from mental health disorders. However, those living happy and healthy lives have learned to address their issue, accept their mental condition, and work towards recovery.

At Harmony Bay, our focus is to provide a warm and caring environment where you have the freedom to talk about your mental health issues, discuss your fears, and overcome the stigma of your condition.

Through psychiatric evaluations, we can uncover the mystery of mental illness and identify what condition you have. Then, we can work toward an appropriate and sustainable solution through our therapy treatment programs. We are here to help you heal and to thrive regardless of your condition.
