Deborah’s passion for social work began in her formal education at SUNY Albany. She learned about the disparities, discrimination, and inequality that still exist today in the US and globally. She wanted to find a way to make a difference even if on a micro-scale. Over time she began pursuing as many sociology and women’s studies courses as she could.
Through her educational journey it became increasingly obvious to her that pursuing a career in social work spoke to my passions as social work takes on a holistic view of a person’s circumstances. Healing is not only about coping skills and talk therapy, it is about accessing assistance, knowing what services are available to aid in struggles and problem solving for all of the difficulties being faced, internal and external.
After her internship with Integrity Senior Services, she was invited to develop a non-profit organization called Out of the Storm Senior Housing. After the creation she was invited to be on the Board of Directors in 2013. In 2019 she received the honor of “Commitment to Mental Health Award” which has been a highlight in her volunteer and social work career.
Why Healthcare
I am passionate about removing the stigma of often stigmatized diagnoses by providing a better understanding. Clients often struggle to accept diagnoses due to lack of knowledge about what they mean and how commonly those diagnoses occur as well as societal stigmas attached to mental illness and mental healthcare. By offering a safe and supportive space and removing the stigma, clients move forward to improved mental health through Psychoeducation and evidenced based practice.
