7 New Year’s Resolutions for a Better You

Nancy MacGregor MA, ATR-BC, LPC, ACS, Clinical Director

Every year, people everywhere make New Year’s resolutions. 2020 has been quite the year, so going into 2021, you have the chance to start fresh and make resolutions that are easy to maintain and will lead to a better version of yourself.

At Harmony Bay Wellness, our main priority is helping you be your absolute best, which is why we’ve put together a list of New Year’s resolutions that won’t feel like a chore. By choosing one or more of these goals, you’ll be one step closer to living your best life.

  1. Make Time for Self-Care

There’s a phrase; you can’t pour from an empty cup, meaning you have to take care of yourself first before you can help others. One way to do this is to set time aside specifically for self-care. Self-care looks different for everyone, so it might be helpful to make a list of the things that you find relaxing or make you happy and then incorporate them into your daily routine. Examples can include going for a walk, taking a hot bath, sitting down with a cup of tea and your favorite book, spending time with friends or family, etc.

  1. Keep a Gratitude List or Journal

Sometimes it’s hard to remember how much we actually have to be thankful for throughout the day. In the morning, when you first wake up or right before bed, take some time to sit and think about what you are grateful for. It can be something exceptionally good that happened to you that day or something as simple as waking up with a roof over your head. Either way, it gives you a chance to reflect on the good things that we sometimes forget about and begin or end each day on a positive note.

  1. Try a New Hobby

Trying something new opens you up to new ideas and can unleash creativity. Have you always wanted to cook your favorite dish to order out? What about trying a new sport? Watching a new movie or joining a book club can be just the thing you never knew you needed. If you find a new hobby that you enjoy, you can even find an online group to connect with others that are enjoying the same thing you are. This makes for a great opportunity to not just learn something new, but meet new people as well.

  1. Eat Healthy Foods

Maintaining a balanced diet is a key factor in how you feel throughout the day. But don’t go to the extreme and start getting rid of all of the foods you enjoy. Instead, make small changes throughout the week, like adding fruits to breakfast or vegetables to lunch and dinner. Switch out white bread for whole grain, but allow yourself to indulge every now and again. By making small changes, you can still enjoy the foods you like while reaping the benefits of the healthier options you’re incorporating. Best of all, you won’t feel like you’re missing out on anything.

  1. Drink More Water

Do you know the benefits of drinking water? Drinking the right amount of water keeps you and your body hydrated and can help with a number of things, such as maximizing physical performance, increasing energy levels, helping brain function, preventing headaches, and assisting with weight loss. Drink a full glass right when you wake up to start your day off on the right foot!

  1. Move Your Body

Regular exercise promotes both physical and mental wellbeing. Whether you like to lift weights, do online fitness classes, or just stretch your legs and go for a walk, staying active can have a significantly positive impact on your day-to-day living. A good way to start moving more is adding a walk around the block into your daily routine and slowly adding on from there. And don’t forget to turn on your favorite show, podcast, or a new song to help you get motivated and into the swing of things.

  1. Limit Screen Time

With many of us working from home, it feels like we’re always staring at a screen. Whether it’s a computer screen, tablet, or your phone, a screen seems to be in front of us. Set aside time each day where you go screen-free. This will give you time to relax and focus on things that bring you joy. Pro tip – use this time to complete one of the other resolutions above!

Building a Better You with Harmony Bay Wellness

To get a New Year’s resolution to stick, you’re going to want to start slow by adding small changes into your daily routine. This way, there’s a higher chance of the resolution sticking. Try incorporating some of these resolutions above and start 2021 off right.
