About

Joseph Allaire is a board-certified Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP-BC) with multiple years of experience working in Psychiatric as well as Critical Care Nursing. Joseph has experience treating various Psychiatric disorders and enjoys working with people in all life stages.

Before joining the team at Harmony Bay, Joseph worked in corrections in Boston where he treated inmates with an array of disorders from Severe Mental Illness, Substance Use and Addiction, to Personality Disorders, Mood Disorders, and PTSD, just to name a few.

Joseph has lived in several foreign countries including four years in Germany, where he completed his first undergraduate degree, and then lived in the Middle East, including six years in Dubai, where he worked in a chemical company before returning home to the United States to pursue his career in healthcare. He speaks German and Spanish fluently and enjoys working with people of all backgrounds. Joseph believes that his background and vast international experience have contributed immensely to making him a well-rounded and culturally sensitive healthcare provider.

In addition to his formal education, Joseph regularly pursues continuing education to constantly stay up to date in his field. He has received various certifications from Harvard University in Psychopharmacology, Neuroscience, Treatment of Major Depressive Disorder, and Positive Psychology. In conjunction with medication treatment, Joseph believes in a wholistic approach to treating his patients and incorporates Positive Psychology to achieve a maximum state of well-being when designing a treatment plan. Along those lines, Joseph employs motivational interviewing with each of his patients to facilitate the achievement of small goals, which, over time, add up to big accomplishments.

Joseph moved to Boston in 2018 and his interests include Organic Chemistry, History, and Traveling.

While Joseph enjoys working with patients of all ages, he discovered a special interest in working with young adults when he was working in various inpatient psychiatric units. He enjoys the ability to initiate treatment at an early age when patients are just starting to experience mental health symptoms for the first time before the patient encounters severe dysfunction as they enter adulthood. Joseph is especially interested in Functional Medicine Psychiatry, which entails a root cause approach. This approach considers the brain in context of whole-body health. This is why he is interested in a detailed understanding of each patient's psychosocial and lifestyle factors to provide truly individualized treatment for everyone.

Why Healthcare

Joseph has long been interested in observing human behavior and figuring out why people behave the way they do. This became even more apparent during his time living and traveling around the world where he was able to observe people of different cultures and experience firsthand how they think and behave differently. Ultimately, his passion for chemistry and his deep interest in human behavior are what led Joseph to Psychiatry. He is aware of the continued stigma of mental illness in society and strives to educate people that mental illness can happen to anyone. He finds it particularly rewarding when he sees patients’ symptoms improve and is passionate about playing the crucial role in that progress.
