About
Karen is a Jamaican-born Licensed Professional Counselor who conducts sessions in English and Jamaican Patois (Patwah). She is trained in marriage, couples, and family therapy and trauma-focused cognitive behavioral therapy (TF-CBT). Karen believes in the resilience of others and that everyone is born with the inner power needed to become the agents of change in their own lives. Through forming a collaborative partnership, Karen strives to have each client play an active role in their therapeutic journey, thus increasing the probability of cultivating their inborn resilience.
Karen's approach has been described as direct, warm, relatable, and empowering. Her therapeutic approach mainly utilizes techniques from Structural Therapy, Cognitive Behavior Therapy, and Narrative Therapy, but other approaches are incorporated as needed to support each client's unique needs. Karen's work always involves a review of the client's ecosystemic influences (e.g., family, culture, work/school, friends) as everyone's unique experience can affect their starting point in therapy and their needs presentation. She provides support to college students and adults in the areas of anxiety, grief, life transitions, postpartum anxiety, betrayal trauma, teen trauma, and being the adult child of immigrants. When not working with clients, Karen can be found baking, exploring different cultures through cooking or trying new restaurants, binge-watching her favorite movies/TV shows, and spending quality time with her family.

Why Healthcare
Karen has always had a pull towards helping others. At first, she thought that it would have been through being a medical doctor, but after taking her first psychology course in college, her focus quickly shifted. You see, mental health was never a topic of discussion in Karen's native country and/or culture, so she became intrigued. Through further investigation, Karen discovered that the aforementioned was proving to be true of other cultures and communities in the US, she saw a way that she could make a positive and hopefully lasting impact on the lives of others through being a therapist.
