Stress Awareness Month

Nancy MacGregor MA, ATR-BC, LPC, ACS, Clinical Director

Lately, it feels like stress is everywhere you turn. Between work, family life, and everything else going on, people are stressed – and understandably so. If the stressors in your life are not properly addressed, it can cause serious mental and physical health damage. However, there are ways you can combat it.

April is stress awareness month. While this has been recognized since 1992, it is particularly important this year. The stressors of everyday life and extraordinary circumstances can become overwhelming, which is why we have some tips to help you get through stressful times.

What is Stress?

Stress is generally defined as physical, mental, or emotional strain or tension. While stress is something that we all experienced, it affects us in different ways. One situation can cause severe stress on one person and not bother another person at all. Our responses to stress also vary. Sadly, there is no quick fix to reduce stress. However, there are some healthy ways to cope with it.

Healthy Ways to Cope with Stress

It’s important to remember that you cannot control everything that happens to you, but you can control how you respond. When in doubt, pick one of these tips below to help you get through your day.

Avoid Certain Situations

If you know surrounding yourself with a particular group of people will cause added stress, try and avoid it as best you can.

Ask for the Help You Need

You know yourself better than anybody else. If you feel yourself becoming overwhelmed by stress to the point that it’s debilitating, reach out to a friend, family member, doctor, or someone you trust. Having someone to talk to – whether a loved one or a doctor – can make a huge difference in your stress levels.

Move Your Body and Exercise

Exercise is known to boost endorphins and be a great stress reliever. Whether you are doing a virtual workout class or you like to go for a run outside, make sure you get up and move at least a few times a day. You’ll feel better for it at the end of the day.

Take a Break

If you feel like stress is consuming you, it’s okay to take a break. Promise. Your physical, mental, and emotional health will thank you for it, even if it’s just a few minutes out of your day to enjoy a cup of coffee or go for a walk around the block and get some fresh air.

Take a Moment to Breathe

If you are feeling particularly stressed, take a deep breath by inhaling through the nose and out through the mouth. Try this five to ten times, or stop whenever you feel more relaxed. For a more long-term practice, you can incorporate meditation into your life. Start by meditating for 10 minutes either first thing in the morning, during your lunch break, or right before bed. Within days you will start to notice a difference.
