Childhood Abuse Therapy

Clinical Studies have shown that a large percentage of adults with adverse childhood experiences are likely to develop chronic physical and mental health conditions. Between 23-55 percent of adults in the United States have experienced one or more adverse childhood experiences between ages 12-17. Most define Childhood abuse as any act of physical, sexual, or psychological maltreatment by caregivers, guardians, or adult figures. Childhood abuse can occur within a community, organization, or home by any person that has interacted with a child. As an adult, people who have experienced childhood abuse will often develop intense feelings of shame, guilt, and mistrust towards others. WHAT ARE COMMON SYMPTOMS OF CHILDHOOD ABUSE?

childhood abuse

Bipolar disorder has been called this because of the cyclical nature of the illness. In this disorder, patients vacillate between high and low episodes that are characterized by periods of mania and periods of depression. The swings are severe enough to affect how a person lives from one side of the range to the other.

During elevated periods, bipolar people will have lots of energy, they may not sleep at all, and develop plans that seem irrational to others and carry them out. During low periods bipolar people can become depressed to the point that they may not be able to get out of bed or complete regular daily tasks.

Cycle lengths can vary from person to person but most commonly cycles last for about seven days in patients that have a more severe form of the disorder. There are four types of bipolar disorder. People with bipolar disorder will appear to go through emotionally intense periods and periods that are devoid of emotion. Each stage comes with its own set of symptoms.

WHAT HAPPENS IN A CHILDHOOD ABUSE TREATMENT PROGRAM?

Childhood abuse is often treated with both individual and group therapy services. Group therapy can be a safe platform to process one’s experiences, feelings, and emotions. Group therapy will prioritize emotional safety, relational-skill building, and practicing mindfulness techniques.

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Narrative Therapy, and Dialectical Behavioral Therapy may be used to guide individuals affected by experiences of childhood abuse to decrease distressing feelings and process traumatic memories. In addition, these treatments for people who have experienced or witnessed childhood abuse can help them develop self-awareness, safety, and connection in relationships with others as adults.
