All About Treatment Resistant Depression

Nancy MacGregor MA, ATR-BC, LPC, ACS, Clinical Director

Depression isn’t fun – and it takes time and care to find ways of easing your symptoms. It usually takes a few tries to find a treatment, or combination of treatments, that work for you.

Taking an antidepressant or going to mental health treatment eases depression symptoms for most individuals. After multiple efforts of trial and error with medications, it’s possible that you might find yourself at a standstill with no signs of relief. If that’s what you’re experiencing then, you may have the medical condition treatment-resistant depression (TRD). With TRD, standard treatments may not be enough to address your treatment.

Your symptoms may improve, only to keep coming back, or they may not help much at all. Antidepressants and counseling might not be enough to ease your depression symptoms

Don’t be disheartened if this is the case. It’s rather common. In fact, up to one-third of adults with major depressive disorder (MDD) don’t respond to treatment. It is best to seek medical advice to alleviate any worry.Just because what you’ve been doing hasn’t been working, doesn’t mean that there is no chance for you to experience relief.

There are alternative treatment methods that may be available to you that can work in combination with or independent of your medications. Combined with talk therapy and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, alternative treatments have been shown to be very promising in treating depression.

They can work on different types of depression, like MDD, Seasonal Affective Disorder, and others in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual. Treating symptoms like loss of interest, feeling of sadness, long-term depressive thoughts, and more.Transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) therapy is a treatment option for people with MDD. It is a non-medicated and non-invasive antidepressant treatment that has minimal side effects.

MDD that is resistant to medication is known as Treatment-Resistant Depression (TRD). For patients experiencing TRD, there is hope in the medication-free, non-invasive alternative treatment, Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation, commonly known as TMS.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If you have tried several medications before with poor results, TMS can be an alternative treatment option to treat your depression.
