COVID-19 Impact on the Mental Health of Essential Business Workers

Nancy MacGregor MA, ATR-BC, LPC, ACS, Clinical Director

During the COVID-19 pandemic, essential business workers have been experiencing elevated anxiety. Grocery store workers have been working endlessly to re-stock shelves, but with this comes a risk of infection from the virus. Customers are flocking the stores and filling their shopping carts with food and bringing their germs in with them. The risk of grocery store and essential business workers returning home at the end of the day and possibly spreading the virus to loved ones is potentially fatal. COVID-19 has already infected and killed thousands of essential business workers across the U.S.

Going into work every day has left workers worried, stressed, and tired. As essential workers continue to work every day throughout this pandemic, it is believed that there will be a greater need for mental health services. New Jersey Department of Health Commissioner, Judi Persichilli, recently stated that the increased number of mental health-related issues during the pandemic is creating new worries for N.J. essential business workers, and residents.

How to Cope with Anxiety and Stress

If you are an essential business worker or know someone who is, there are ways to manage mental health. Doing so will reduce stress and likely lower anxiety as the crisis continues. For example, essential business workers can do the following:

  • Follow business guidelines. Every business should have a standard set of guidelines in place to help keep their workers safe. Following these guidelines can prevent workers from becoming infected and slow the spread of the virus. Check with your business to see their guidelines. Keeping a 6ft distance, washing hands often, and wearing masks while working, have all been recommended by the CDC. Many businesses have also put protective glass screens up as checkout counters to act as a barrier between customers and cashiers.
  • Take some time to relax. If you are an essential worker during the pandemic, you are likely to work an increased number of hours. Make sure you still are getting some time to relax during the day to help you re-center your mind and stay on track.
  • Talk to someone. If you are experiencing increased levels of anxiety, there are many resources to help you. Talk to your supervisor or coworkers to let them know how you are feeling. They may be experiencing the same thing and can give you some advice. Reach out to loved ones or friends through video chat to stay connected with them. A great option for many people who are experiencing heightened anxiety is to speak to a licensed therapist to guide them through their emotions.
