How to Find a Therapist

Nancy MacGregor MA, ATR-BC, LPC, ACS, Clinical Director

A common New Year’s resolution for people struggling with their mental health is to finally seek therapy. Maybe you’re struggling to come to terms with childhood abuse. Perhaps you are having a hard time controlling your anger. Or, maybe, you’re suffering from depression or anxiety, and you’re looking for relief. There are a variety of reasons why you might be seeking therapy. However, you aren’t sure how to find a therapist in South Jersey.

At Harmony Bay, we want to help you with that troublesome first step. We can offer several reasonable options for finding a therapist. Conversely, you can enroll in one of our therapy programs and get the individualized therapy you need. No matter your need, if you find yourself wondering if there’s a therapist or psychiatric service near you in Cherry Hill, NJ, Harmony Bay Wellness is your answer.

If you’re like most people, you go to your doctor when you have a stomach bug or another physical problem. They may treat you in their office, or they may refer you to another doctor. Similarly, if you tell your doctor that you’re struggling with your mental health, they may be able to send you to a therapist who can meet your needs.

Additionally, friends and family members may have a recommendation. Many people in the United States go to therapists; your friends and family may be in that number. While their therapist may not be the right fit for you, they can refer you to a different professional that may be better suited for your needs. At Harmony Bay, we have several psychiatrists on staff who you can speak with.

Depending on where you work, your job may offer an in-house therapist. If they don’t, more often than not, they can refer you to one. Going to see a work-sponsored therapist can be helpful and keep costs down.

Universities and schools also often employ therapists. For instance, you may remember going to a guidance counselor to schedule your classes in high school. These counselors are usually either licensed therapists, or they can refer to a specialist who works with the school.

A third option is to call your insurance company and see if they can recommend a therapist for you. By doing this, you can find a therapist that will work with your insurance here in South Jersey.

The internet is often our first step to finding anything from a nearby pizza place to figuring out if your symptoms are from a cold or life-threatening disease. The internet can also be a great tool to help you find a therapist. Googling “therapists near me” can help you find a therapist, and get reviews. Then you can figure out if they can give you the therapy you need.

There are tremendous resources, including apps that allow you to speak one on one with a therapist at your leisure. However, it’s often best to see someone in your local area who you can develop a relationship with in order to get the most out of therapy. If you’re looking for a therapist in South Jersey, Harmony Bay is here to help.
